More growth

Poor wee S and his immature social skills.

This morning he told me that he didn’t want to go to school today. Immediately my radar started humming, and I had to force the issue to find out what was causing his angst.

Historically, when S claimed that he didn’t want to go to school it was because either LB was picking on him, or one of LB’s friends had threatened him in some way, so I immediately became concerned. I asked him if he had a test that he hadn’t studied for – head shake to the negative. I asked him if someone had done something to make him feel threatened – head shake to the negative. At this point he informed me that he “didn’t want to talk about it.” Now, knowing my son as I do, I knew that was not the exact truth. He wanted to talk about it, or he wouldn’t have mentioned anything. He just didn’t know how to go about talking about it.

After a few more probing questions, I guess S realized that my “pit bull attitude” wasn’t going to let up on the subject, so he decided it was time to talk about it. He told me that he was afraid his actions of yesterday were going to cause him to lose a friend today. Then began the “which friend” question, followed by the name of a friend or two. Heaving a big sigh (such a drama queen, my S) he told me that he was worried that he was going to lose a girl’s friendship because he had ‘asked her out’ yesterday and she had told him “No.”

He was dreading have to ask this girl to “forget yesterday ever happened.” I asked him why she would want to do that and he explained to me that he had been friends with Lil A for years and then after they ‘went out’ for that time in September, she is no longer his friend because she now dating another boy. I told him that it doesn’t have to be that way, and that as he gets older, he will ask more and more girls, then women, out and will sometimes have to face being rejected. It’s just how things go. I then tried making light of the situation by telling him “It’s not like you asked her to marry you and she said no, you know.” He did share a little chuckle over that idea, and then started to get out of bed.

Amazing how just sharing something with Mom can make ‘huge’ problems not seem so bad. I’m just very grateful that both of my son’s feel that they can talk to me about various subjects. My hope is that this continues well into the future. (Cuz told me that sometimes her son’s share too much information now that they are in their mid to late 20’s, but I think I would rather that than not being aware of anything. Well, maybe…)

Last night the boys helped me pull out the Christmas decorations from the crawl space. I was in the crawl space, S was just at the entry way, and the A-man was lugging the boxes into the pool table room. After about the 6th box, S exclaimed “How many of these do you have, Mom?!” Apparently my children feel I have too many decorations. After I had all the boxes in the room, I was starting to think that way to!

The A-man and I managed to get the banisters decorated with both garland and lights. I then laid out the ‘snow’ on my dining room hutch and set up my snowman family. Still need to find the white twinkle lights to complete that area. Then S and the A-man both helped me get the Christmas tree set up. Tonight will likely involve putting the lights and decorations on the tree, and maybe starting to move the ‘regular’ nick knacks to decide where the Christmas things will go. My plan is to clean each area just prior to putting out decorations, but we will have to see what happens.
I don’t think I remembered how much I had decorated last Christmas until I started pulling things out last night. Case in point – I forgot that last year I had put garland and lights all around the cupboards in the kitchen as well as on the fireplace mantel and the windows in the basement. I must have really been in the spirit last year – will have to see if that happens again this year.

I’m also hoping to get the front entryway to the house cleaned up and maybe make it a bit more festive looking. Tomorrow or Sunday for that.

Holiday time yet?

I am tired.

Lately, the more I have been sleeping, the more sleep it would appear I require. I’m not sure if my current state is because of a busy past weekend or something more.
I’ve not been very pleased with a number of things at work over the last little while, but I can’t imagine that has drained me this much. I have updated my resume and I’ve even sent a couple out to some really interesting-sounding jobs, but I’m still enjoying the day to day tasks of my job. (Not many others can have that claim, I hear.)

Since we are looking at a long weekend, I am hoping that the extra day of a sleep in will provide me with the rest I require. I told Hubby that I didn’t want to go to the cottage this weekend. I just want to have a weekend at home, in my own bed, doing what I want to do whenever the urge strikes me. He was okay with that – he always has about a million little projects on the go. So, this weekend, the first of a number of long weekends, we have no plans what so ever.

Next week is a short work week, then I will be off for a week’s holidays. I won’t be going anywhere for these holidays, however. S will be participating in a special educational technology camp every afternoon from 1pm until 4pm, and one parent is to attend the camp with him. S will be given more intensive training on his laptop – using the various programs that he has installed on it – and I will be learning more about the devices, too. It is the hope of Hubby and I that S will learn a few more things about his system and will be more willing to use it in class. (Always seems to be an issue for him in the past.)

I don’t think the school office will be open for that week, but I am going to have to make an appointment to find out more about the EA that S may have, as well as the timing he will have an EA for. I will also have to try and meet each of the teachers and inform them of the uniqueness that is S. I think it’s imperative that each teacher receive some type of forewarning.

Since the technology camp is in the afternoons only, I am really looking forward to being able to take my time in the mornings and just putter and get things done around the house and yard. This too should allow for some extra rest time for me.

Oh! We have started getting eggs from the chickens! The last couple of days we have had three eggs laid in a couple of different nests. We’ve only had one soft-shelled egg so far, and each day they seem to be getting bigger and bigger. I used one yesterday for my breakfast, and it was a double-yoked egg. The first two eggs that we got had a small blood spot in each of them, but I haven’t seen any since then. Not sure how long it will take until each hen starts laying an egg a day, but it’s a nice surprise to go in to the coop each day to see what has been left for us!

Time's slipping away...

I think this has been the longest that I have neglected my poor blog!

Quick update on the "farming" side of my life: two eggs were laid the other day (!), we lost two chickens in as many days - silly girls flew out of their run never to be seen again, and a pheasant has some how gotten out of the coop so we are down to 19 chickens and 11 pheasants.

Now, let's see if I can do some recap... Boys and Hubby were off at the cottage and left me home alone for the week. I enjoyed that week even though I didn't really do anything other than housework and read! But I will admit that I did get kind of lonely, too.

The second week of Hubby's holidays was also a holiday week for me. We went up to the cottage on the Friday evening.
On Saturday, we went to the trailer park where Cuz has her 'summer home'. My cousin (that is Cuz's husband) has recently finished his stem cell transplant - which will hopefully knock this blasted cancer out of his body forever - and that Saturday was a fundraiser day for the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. (This is the cancer hospital where he underwent his treatment.) Although my cousin was supposed to me running this fundraising event, we knew the responsibility would fall to others as his heart is in the right place, but his organizational skills are just a little lacking...
Anyway, there was a pig roast, a live band, a motorcycle show-and-shine, and a horseshoe tournament, and the last report that I got is that the event raised over $3,500, which is pretty incredible considering the size of the venue. Cuz and I were able to sneak away to spend a bit of quality chat-time together, but of course it wasn't enough. We never seem to get enough of that.

On the Sunday afternoon, Sammy and her Hubby arrived at the cottage for a week of holiday fun with us. The weather did not cooperate for most of the week, but at least the Thursday and Friday were nice. (We are really having a terrible summer so far - the temperatures and sunshine don't seem to realize that it is July in Ontario!!)

We came home on the Saturday morning, and Sunday was the "Kid's Fishing Day" event for the Fish & Game Club we belong to. I tried - unsuccessfully - to wake the boys to come with me so that as a family we could assist the club, but since it was the first time the boys had slept in their own beds for quite a while, I guess they were happy to stay snuggled under the comforters.
I went to the event to provide my help, and it was very successful indeed! We had over 240 kids participate in the 4 hour fishing day, and it was really great to see the reaction of some of these children when they caught a fish for the very first time. It was also a very nice feeling to be able to give each child their own rod and reel when they left that afternoon. I'm sorry the boys missed it, actually.

This past week went by a blur, to be honest. Monday evening the boys and I harvested some lettuce and went to deliver a bag of it to our new neighbours. (Nothings says "Welcome" like a bag of fresh produce...)
On Tuesday I stopped in to see a friend on my way home from work, and ending up staying for a while to assist her with preparing a legal document. When I got home I started working on updating my resume.
Wednesday night took me to an appreciation dinner. We went to a wedding a little while back, and the parents of the groom held a dinner for those of us that helped with getting the tent ready. Isn't that nice? I told her we helped because we WANTED to and didn't expect anything in return, but they hosted a dinner anyway. It was a very enjoyable evening.
Thursday was my golf lesson night.
Friday I left work early - it was actually sunny and beautiful in the morning, and I'd made plans with Jazzy's mom to have an afternoon on the beach. It started to rain just as we were heading out, but we had a nice visit at their house regardless.
We didn't stay late that afternoon, although she was very kind and had invited us to stay for dinner. I had not been sleeping well last week, and after we left Jazzy's, the boys and I picked up groceries, and when we got home, I left them to put everything away so that I could lay down for a nap. I had a good nap and still went to bed that night at 10:30!

Last week Hubby was on afternoons, and my travels kept me away from the house for most of the nights until late, but the boys managed just fine. I'm in a state of adjustment right now, I think. I'm starting to come to the realization that my kids don't really need me anymore; they are starting to be independent individuals. Okay, that's not quite true - they still need me, but they don't need me as much, for as many things.
I remember longing for those days... when I couldn't pick up a phone without having the two of them break into a fight or suddenly have something they HAD to tell me, when I had to either make all my plans for when Hubby was on days or hire a sitter, when I had to make sure I got home right after work so that dinner was finished and we had some time together before they went to bed.
And now that time is here... now I am simply the person that makes sure there is food in the house and that can transport whenever necessary and that goes to bed before they even think about it... I'm not sure I'm ready for this!

This and that

We can tell that an 'exciting' time is about to arrive.
S had two separate incidents last week at school. I got a phone call to come and get him after the first one, and the second one had a 'teacher in charge' and she just left a message on my cell phone about the incident and told me that he was bringing home a "Think Sheet."

March Break starts next week.

Hubby and I have talked to S about this, and he claims that he isn't 'excited' but I'm not so sure. On Sunday he didn't take his medication - he 'forgot' - and holy smokes! I ended up sending him to his room until he could get a handle on his actions. He stayed in there for the better part of an hour.

Yesterday when S got home from school he told me that he isn't to be our of the EA's sight for the remainder of the week. Gee, that's what I thought was the deal before...
This is a direct result of the reaction S gave on Friday at lunch time. The EA wasn't at the school and he had a sub EA. I guess she didn't see the warning signs, or she was too far away from him or something.
I'll never understand this. It is very clearly documented that S doesn't do well during unstructured time, and therefore needs extra monitoring, yet he only seems to experience issues in the yard. Well, the first incident last week was in the yard, but was over his tape recorder. He didn't want to give it up when the EA saw that he had it.
That one I didn't have an issue with - he shouldn't have taken it outside because that isn't what it is to be used for.

I never got a follow up letter or phone call, so I am thinking the school recognizes that they were partly to blame for Friday's bruhaha.

The A-man continues to grow and thrive. He is enjoying his new semester - English, Math, Civics and Religion - and although he never seems to have homework, appears to be doing well in all of his classes. Sounds like his English teacher is quite the card, and he has the same Religion teacher as last year, so those two classes are bound to be fun for him.

The A-man will be turning 16 in a few short weeks. I asked him if he wanted to have a party, and he told me that if he had a surprise party he wouldn't mind, but he didn't want to actually PLAN a party with me.
Guess I will have to contact his unofficial girlfriend to get some ideas about who to invite since I don't really know the names of his new school friends. See, he only sees them during school hours and never contacts them outside of class. He doesn't even know some of their last names, where they live, or their telephone numbers.
He is so much like his father it scares me. ;o)

Oh - quick funny to share!

This morning as S was getting out of bed, the A-man stopped at the door, looked at S (in his underwear) looked down at himself (also in similar-coloured underwear) and said,
"Oh my. I am so embarrassed! Look, we are wearing the same outfit!" Then pranced away into his room to get dressed. Such a card that boy is.

I really need to push the sleep pants on a school morning. He normally has on a robe, but for some reason today didn't. What a kid.

Upcoming events...

The past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of activity. Hubby has been on the afternoon shift, and I have been busy every single night of the week and each weekend. The next couple of weeks, with events planned only for weekends is going to be a nice change of pace.

Last weekend I was in Montreal. Although it is a very long drive (about 7 hours with breaks), it was a great weekend, and a lot of fun. Always good to have fun when you are working, I think; makes the job easier.

This week I have only fitness classes on my calendar. Well, that and a baking night tonight with The A-man. He has joined the Green Club at the school and they are having a fund-raising bake sale on Thursday, so tonight we are going to make apple muffins and cookie pizza. I might try and squeeze in a couple of pies for Thanksgiving weekend, too.

This coming weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving; both boys have yet another PA day on the Friday.

Saturday night we are hosting a blind wine-tasting event. Jazzy’s parents and another couple will be coming over. Each couple is responsible for bringing a bottle of white and a bottle of red from a certain region. We will cover the bottles so that no one know which wine we are tasting, then we will make our tasting notes and decide which wine is the winner. My choice for this event is wine from California – the white will be a Sauvignon Blanc and the red will be Cabernet Sauvignon.
Now, none of us are particularly wine-savvy, but it should be a fun night. I’m going to visit the local cheese monger on Friday and put together some nice cheese plates to accompany the wines.

Sunday afternoon will be the day we celebrate Thanksgiving with Hubby’s family. My brother in law’s family will be attending, as will Hubby’s parents. I don’t think we will get to see my sister in law this time around, but I am sure we will see her soon. My brother (obviously) isn’t able to attend Thanksgiving this year, and I think his wife and kids are going to visit her family for the weekend. I’m not sure if my parents will be around or not; they had talked of closing the cottage this weekend.

Next weekend; Vegas! The four ladies from the “40 & Fabulous” post are going to be leaving for Vegas on Thursday night. We are scheduled to arrive around 11pm Vegas-time on Thursday. For the Friday evening we have booked tickets to see Le Cage au Folle. The Saturday will be a bit busier – we are going to The Price is Right – Live on Saturday afternoon then in the evening, Mr. Las Vegas himself; Wayne Newton! I also have requested that we have either dessert or high tea at the Bellagio, and I want to take a gondola ride and see the dolphins. I don’t think we are going to have enough time to do all that I want to do. Either that or I won’t be sleeping much. We leave Vegas on the Sunday night at 11pm and have a brief stopover in Winnipeg. I won’t be working on the Monday.

>:o}

I am sick. My ears hurt, my throat hurts, I can hardly take a deep breath without going in to a coughing fit. Stupid summer cold.
I even took the day off today. Slept for most of it, actually. Not sure if I will be going in tomorrow, either. Hmrphf.

We had our yard sale on the weekend. Got rid of a bunch of stuff and made a couple hundred dollars in the process. Now the task of trying to clean up the house from the purge begins. I'm slowly puttering away at it, but this cold has laid me up a wee bit, obviously. But, on the upside, I am seeing improvements.

Spoke with boss this morning and found out that the new assistant gave his notice at his current part-time job - and was offered a full time position. I'm happy for him, I guess, but I was really looking forward to working with this guy. The other person will be fine, too, I'm sure, but there was a reason he was our first pick, you know?

Yesterday Hubby and I bought a pool for the yard. It's used, but the offer that was made to us was simply too darn good to not take advantage of. The pool is 24 feet across and will be about 4 feet deep or so. Now the fun task of preparing the ground has to be tackled, and we are hoping it will all be in place and filled before Hubby and the boys go to the cottage for their last week of holidays. The boys won't be able to enjoy it too much, but I am hoping we have at least a couple of warm days in September that will let them feel like it's worth a swim. (I'm sure they will go in at least twice...)

I have to start thinking about 'back to school' shopping soon, too, I guess.

End of holidays...

Why does time go so fast when on a break from the everyday?
Last week was probably one of the most productive breaks I have had in a while, and it was also one in which we did quite a bit of FUN things, too.

Hubby and I took the boys golfing on Wednesday. Neither of them have ever played before, and they both did really well. I knew both boys had a natural swing - they have joined me on the driving range a few times, and I was always blown away with how well they both could hit the ball. Frustrating, really, considering I am trying to learn this game, and don't seem to have a knack for it as of yet.
Thursday was a yard work day. Hubby and I picked up 3 yards of wood chips, and then S and I spent the afternoon removing weeds and laying the chips down in my badly-depleted garden pathways. Hubby and the A-man had a number of errands to run that afternoon, so they got out of the major slugging. I was very impressed with how hard S worked that afternoon. He was taking the weeds out to the compost bin whenever the bucket and/or wheel barrel was full, and he was also filling the barrel up with the chips from the trailer.
I would say that we got just over half of the pathways finished before I had to get showered and cleaned up to head off to my Pilates class, but I am very pleased with how the beds are looking. I spent a fair bit of time pulling out weeds from my greatly neglected gardens as I went along. Hopefully I will be able to continue in that vain later this week.

Friday we went back up to the cottage for the weekend. What beautiful weather! Cuz and her family came up for the weekend, and I would say a fun time was had by all until they got a not-so-nice phone call about my Aunt.
After they left, we were still able to enjoy the weather and the day, but I think all of us were a bit more subdued. Dad was able to take us for a small ride on the new boat, but then the engine started overheating so we quickly came back to the dock. I had prepared a cooler for a picnic, so we all just had the picnic on the dock. Our kids, plus 3 of their local friends quite liked being able to swim up and get another sandwich, or a slice of watermelon!
Later in the afternoon my mom and I went for a toot in the paddle boat, and then had a swim. I was amazed at how warm the water was. Hubby took me out in the small boat to give me a lesson on working the trolling motor, so then he and I spent about half an hour trying our luck at catching the big one. He caught a wee perch - we let it go - and none of the local fish were interested in my lure at all. (pout, pout, pout...)

I was the only one that left the cottage tonight. Since Hubby is on the afternoon shift tomorrow, and the weather was so perfect today, he decided he and the boys would come home late in the morning. My dad had his motorcyle at the cottage and thought he would do some work in the morning and then head back home, and that decided it for my Mom. I can't do that getting up at 5:30 to make it to work on time, so the dumb beagle and I got home around 10 tonight.

Back to work tomorrow - but I figure I will be having to take a day off in the next week or so. It doesn't sound like my Aunt is going to last much longer, I'm sad to say. I was planning on going to see her on Tuesday afternoon, but right now it's all up in the air. Really hard for the kids.

Past Weekend

The family headed up to the cottage again this past weekend. (Actually, that is where we are going to be for the next few weekends!)
The thing that was unique for us this weekend was that my parents weren't there. They had a wedding to attend, so it was just our family of 4. Hubby and I both had a nice time, and I know the boys always have fun when we are there.

The cottage is actually located on a native reserve. Saturday was Aboriginal Day. We didn't get over to the pow wow on Saturday, though. The boys had asked permission to go, but by the time they started out, the event was already done. The evening fireworks, however, was something the entire family was able to go to. Other than the mosquitoes being bad just prior to the start of the display, I would have to say it was an incredible night! For such a small reserve, they certainly did not spare any expense to celebrate. I was really glad we made it over there.

Today was the A-man's last exam. He is very happy that he is no longer "a dumb niner" and will soon be in the double digits of grades. I hadn't thought about that until he mentioned that at dinner, but I guess that is the case.
S didn't go to school today. Given the turn of events on Friday, and then knowing that today was going to be the Grade 8 graduation - at the choas that goes with that - I opted to have him stay home and simply take it easy. Again, I know they wouldn't be doing any actual work, so I didn't feel like I was a bad parent. Sometimes staying home and out of the excitement is just what he needs.
S is going to go to school tomorrow, though. He wants to show his EA that he can have a good day - a day without incidents - so that she won't be so nervous about him going on the mountain biking expedition on Wednesday. He is very excited about getting to do that. I'm not sure if he will go on the last day, so I will get him to make sure his desk is empty tomorrow - just in case.

I am off on holidays next week, so the boys and I are going to head up to the cottage on Thursday night. Hubby is working nights, so he won't be arriving until late Saturday morning. We will likely stay at the cottage until Canada Day (July 1st) but a lot of what we do will depend on my sister in law. She is visiting from England and I know the boys will not want to miss the chance to see their favourite aunt. We will likely head back on Thursday or Friday of the next weekend to finish off our holidays.
Can you tell we love it up there??

Weekend updates

The painting didn't happen on Saturday as planned, but it is now finished! What a difference from that horrible wallpaper that was there before.

We had stripped it back before Christmas, but this is the first time either Hubby or I have been in the frame of mind, or required energy state, to complete this task.

I didn't like the fact that we were rushing to complete the task before our parents arrived for Easter dinner, but sometimes we need these sorts of kick in the pants to get jobs done, huh?

I did manage to get most of the meal prep done before everyone arrived. We had a turkey breast - I marinated it for most of the day - along with roasted potatoes, a couple types of veggies, and we started dinner with a spinach salad with raspberries and walnuts.

I set the table early in the day, because no matter what state you (or the kitchen) is in, if the table looks lovely, you are golden. Actually, that was the first thing my mother-in-law said when she arrived. "Oh, the table looks lovely. Very elegant." I was just fresh out of the shower, there were prep dishes all over the kitchen, but all she commented on was the lovely table setting. :o)

One more thing I need to post a picture of. The A-man's new smile... The boy is going to be a heartbreaker...

I must explain yesterday's blog - I was not having the best of days at work.
I just don't understand how someone can be SO obtuse about so many subjects, and just not get it. Then, when you explain in further detail, said person then acts like you are the idiot - almost like he was testing to see if you knew what you were talking about. It's not been much better this morning, I'm afraid. For now that is all I am going to say.

I left work at 3 yesterday. The A-man had a final check at the orthodontist, and the braces come off next week. He is very happy about that, I will admit. After the appointment, the boys and I went on a 'date.' We went and picked up some fun "St. Patrick's Day" stuff - me for the weekend in Montreal, them for Monday at school. The luck of the Irish will be surrounding us.

After our shopping trip, we did a few more errands, then we went to a movie - we saw "The Jumper." Not a bad movie - more of a prequel for the next one, if you know what I mean. The computer graphics and special effects were incredible, but when it was finished, you just knew that another one was going to be coming out.

When the movie was finished, we had just enough time for me to head over for my 'website training' for the ADHD board. The boys came with me - obviously - and they were happy to see the gaming systems at the house we were having the meeting at. They played like "RockStars" and watched a movie. The snow was falling as we left, but closer to home there was nothing, thank heavens.

When we got home, all hell broke loose. The A-man had purchased a new video game for his Wii while we were doing our errands. He got frustrated when he was trying to load up the game, and then S and I were the targets for his RAGE episode. I did not manage things as well as I could have, I suppose, but this does happen when trying to do too many things at once. Lesson learned for Mom.

Over the past few days, I have noticed that the A-man does not cope well with unstructured time. He was commenting Saturday that he was 'bored.' This does not bode well when just starting a week's break...
He acted a total goon on Monday, to the point that my mom even commented on it when we went for a visit. He was much better yesterday, but last night, not so much.
After quite a bit of down time in his room, he was able to think more rationally. I could tell he was very remorseful over his earlier actions, which then lead me to (again) trying to explain to him that he needs to take time away from the frustrations rather than trying to 'improve' things - which then ALWAYS makes it worse.
I don't know if he will ever fully understand that things can never be 'better' while in the heat of the moment, but my hope is that if I continue to explain this, maybe - eventually - it will sink in. The A-man has grown and matured so much - he just needs to realize that he isn't quite there just yet. (Being 6 feet tall does not make you 'fully grown' in that sense.)

Poor S was just trying to stay out of the A-man's way while this episode was going on, but no matter what he did, he just seemed to be a target. Pet the cat, the A-man screams at him...try to make a joke, get yelled at. Yeah, it just was not a very good end to an otherwise fun afternoon.
Poor R-man was in his room, with the door closed, I'm sure wondering what was happening, and why. This is when I become so embarrased about the rage episodes. In my head I know that *I* have nothing to be embarrased about, but I still suffer from that - and guilt. The A-man is totally irrational during the event, then SO upset after he has calmed. 98% of the time he is a delight - the other 2%... not so much.

I am sad today. Just.... sad.

More time today

Oh, there is so much to update! I've been away for the better part of two weeks - there should be quite a bit to update, wouldn't you think?

First of all, Terso Resort and Spa in Manzanillo, Mexico is a beautiful place to visit. Hubby and I had a wonderful time, and it was just so peaceful and relaxing. Of course, it was very different from our vacation last year, because we didn't have the boys with us. May sound a bit harsh, but we really did have a much more relaxing vacation this time. We both came home very relaxed and refreshed, and next year, hubby says he wants to take two weeks (!!)

A sunset view from our balcony...
(having internet issues...will try again later...)

I think it also helped bring us closer - if that is possible. We tried to do a little bit each day - just so we would feel like we got to see the area. The first morning we went in to the closed town - called Santiago Bay. We wandered a couple of markets, had lunch at a wee restaurant, looked at the sights, and started to get our bearings. Sunday afternoon, we took a small boat cruise that stopped at a coral reef for some snorkling. Monday was our ATV adventure morning. Jori - off-road warrier!

Tuesday we went in to the city (or is is a town) of Manzanillio. Just getting there was an adverture. (You will have to ask for more details on that one, if you want to know.) Hubby got a new ring on this jaunt. It has Australian opals, and rubies and diamonds in it. The ring had to be brought up quite a number of sizes to fit hubby's finger, and the man in the store said he knew it couldn't be getting resized for a Mexican because mexican men don't have hands that big! We went back in to Manzanillio on Wednesday to pick up Hubby's ring, and I did a bit of wave advertures. Brought back a ton of sand that day...

Thursday was Valentine's Day - we poked around the small town again, and just sort of followed the shade around. Had a wonderful dinner at the al la carte that night, then danced up a storm at the disco. Friday was coming home day, and I was so sad about having to do that, but it was nice to get back home and see how the boys were.

They did just fine without us, I am happy to say. S had a bit of a problem at school on the Monday while making sock monkeys, but for the most part, it sounds like he did just fine. The A-man had no problems at all - other than no taking a hat or mitts to my Mom's house, and it was quite cold that week. Guess he will know for the future, huh? Mom brought him here to the house to gather items - I don't know why she made that long drive - I would have either made him suffer (yes, I'm mean) or more than like just gone and grabbed something at Wal-mart.

The A-man got his first semester report card back while we were away.
  • Drama - 81%
  • Geography - 81%
  • Learning Strategies - 95%
  • Science - 75%

  • Overall average - 83%

(!!) Yes, I am very proud of him. I knew he could do it - now he knows it, too.

We got home on Saturday afternoon. I did a few loads of laundry, and then we went over to friends for dinner - we were making Lithuanen "caldunia" - it's sort of like perogies, I guess. It was a nice night, but since I had to be up and on the road for 5:30 the next morning, I wasn't ready to party too much.

Sunday, I was out the driveway just before 5:30. Got to the airport in plenty of time, and we loaded the plane just before 10 am. Then we were delayed for over an hour. I missed my connecting flight in Altanta, but they were able to reschedule me with relative ease. Got to Jackson, MS around 4, and in to my hotel room for 4:30. Conference started at 6.

Got home last night - Wednesday - around 8pm. Work today was CRAZY. Have more than 4 full pages of "To Do" items - and boss left the office this afternoon around 4:30 and will be back Monday afternoon. Sheesh...

Have more to post with respect to S and his laptop, etc. - that will be done tomorrow, I think. Time for a hottub with Hubby and the A-man.

Some good news!

The R-man told me that his dad (Cuz's husband) will be going back to work on very light duties on Monday! A few short weeks ago, he was a "Class 4 Heart Failure" patient, and now, after the bloods clots thinned, and defibulator put in, he is able to go back to work. I imagine that is one happy household right now.
That is very good news, Cuz, I was very happy to hear that. Now you just have to wait for him to get the Green Light to drive again, and life will be almost back to normal again!

Got to work about 2 hours late today, and left an hour early, but at least I left with my desk cleaned off, and the portable office all put away. I got my nails looking all purty, and then went to my board meeting. It was long. 'nuff said there.

S must have been very tired - he was sleeping when I got home at 9:30. I will have to be sure to give him lots of hugs and cuddles in the morning, since I won't see him for over a week after he gets on the bus tomorrow. I'm not as concerned about the A-man, but S just seems to have a really rough go of things when I am out of town. Hopefully all will be fine. I really do worry about him, poor wee booger.

Hubby is wanting to be on the road for 9 am, and planning on being up at 7 am to show the R-man how to use the snowblower. I will have to get the boys up and off to school, then cut Hubby's hair, and pack our last minute items, so this is probably be my last blog until I return. If I can get Internet access while in Manzanillo, I will post a brief blog, if not, I will let y'all know about it when I get back.

TTFN.

Still out of sorts

I'm not sure if I am coming down with something, or if I'm just over-tired, but I have not been 'right' all day today.

Hubby called me at work today, to just go over any of the last minute things we need to do before we depart on our holiday. Of course, the many little things take up all kind of time, but I think I was able to get through most of them. The main thing is making sure the boys have all that they need for a week away.

I was going to go in to my Mom and Dad's tonight for a wee visit, because my mom will be leaving for her Australia trip on the day we return from Mexico, so we won't be seeing her for over a month, but the weather wasn't willing to cooperate tonight. I am going to stop there in the morning and drop off the things for the A-man, plus to leave the birthday card I made for my mom, and the Valentine's day card I made for the A-man. I made one for S, too, and hubby will deliver all of that to his mom's tomorrow morning.

I have the majority of the packing finished. I need to add in a pair of capri's, and a couple of tank-tops, and wide-brimmed hats, then I think I am packed and ready to go. Hubby wants to be on the road for about 9 am on Friday. I have a board meeting tomorrow night, so I need to make sure all the 'last minute' things are taken care of today.

I also have to keep in mind the fact that I will be unpacking and repacking within a matter of hours when I return from Mexico, so I will have to pack the suitcase for the return trip to ensure I have the things that need to be washed and dried on that Saturday. Sheesh.

Boss and I went over the conference itinerary this morning. I know know which terminal I will be flying out of, and was very releived to learn that I would not have to worry about my luggage during my lay-over in Atlanta. I've never had a lay-over before, and have no idea what is involved in that whole thing. Boss told me that it's quite easy, and actually told me that Atlanta airport is one of the best of shopping and resturants. Will be around lunch time that I will be there, so this is a good thing to know.

Have called the school to inform them of our upcoming departure - in case they have forgotten, or can't read the agenda - but I have yet to get a return phone call. Will place another call in the morning, I suppose.

I'm off to tackle some more laundry. Want to make sure I am as caught up as I can possibly be before Friday morning...

Looking forward to holiday...

Hubby and I have booked an ATV off-road tour for the Sunday of our holiday! It just sounds like a GREAT day - and a wonderful way to really get to see the area. I think the other tour that we are going to try and take is a Volcano Tour, but I think we will wait until we get to Mexico to book that one.
Looked at the long range forecast for that area of Mexico... lows of 23 or 24, highs of 29 or 30....sunny every day. Yes, the next week and a half will not go by fast enough for this girl, I will admit.

Cuz - in answer to your comment on my last post - Thank you. I hadn't even thought about the fact that working with the doctor could prove our case even further. I was just upset about the news that we couldn't get a new EA. You made a very valid point, and, if she is successful in working with the doctor, either way, S will come out ahead. And, yes, only one more year...
Unfortunately, the current principal will not be remaining at our school. He will find out from the superintendent today when he is going to be replaced with our 'permanent' principal. He told me that he has told the board what type of person our school requires, and that we need someone that will be consistant, a member of the community...that sort of thing. I just hope the current acting principal will share details about S's history with whomever replaces him.
It's possible he will remain until the end of the school year, but at this point, he just doesn't know what is going to happen. He was slated to leave at the end of January, but since that is Thursday, I don't think that will be happening... What a bloody mess...

Anyway, S had to work on his Science test-revision last night for homework. He did very poorly on the test, as I figured he would. He did not study at all, and I know he probably tried to rush right through it to simply be done. He spent a fair bit of time on the homework, though - he was required to use the text book to find the correct answers to the questions.
As I was helping him through it, our financial advisor arrived for our appointment, and so I left S to his own devices in the dining room, while we met in the kitchen. After a little while, the A-man wandered into the dining room and helped S with reading the parts of the text book that were confusing him. He can be nice to his little brother - sometimes.

S hasn't been able to bring his laptop home since there has been a new 'error' on it. I asked about it at the meeting, but the principal didn't know when the request for repair would be finalized. I will let it go until Monday. S is off on Thursday for his appointment, and the SERT is back to the school then. I will follow up when I return from the show.
